We got a Switch for Christmas, with a one-year family membership. My twins want to play on line with their friend. He has a membership also. It appears, though, that they can only play one-on-one with their friend. There seems to be no way for the two of them to play together with their friend. Is that just the shitty way that it is?

I don’t own a Switch ( or any Nintendo products ), nor have I played Smash Bros Ultimate. However, doing some digging, it appears that there is no way to have two people on one console ( Co-op) with friends online. The dumb thing is that you can play Co-op with random people online in the quick play mode.
Plenty of people appear to be complaining about this fact on various forums, however Nintendo hasn’t seemed to address this.

Thanks. I did a little bit of digging myself and couldn’t find anything definitive. The fact that you have to pay a fee to play online at all is appalling.

This is a reason I quit playing xbox and forza. Paying a fee to access online content for the year, or by the month, then in game purchases for download packs... nope. Even GTA for PlayStation. I also came to realize I was not good or at best I was below average. I quit and we just use the ps3 for streaming mostly.

Same tbh. Had a Wii u and only used it for smash. Traded it with my cousin for his MacBook instead

The boys are enjoying the rest of the Switch very much, aside from this online play issue. One of my boys has already played most if not all of the new Jedi game on the PS4.

The newest console I have is a PS3 back from 2006. I didn’t play much online, but it was free to access. It’s frustrating how many things are going this way these days.
I don’t game much anymore, but I usually gravitate to my old PS2 when I do.
